Canadian High Court weighs “Safe Third Country Agreement” with US
The safe third country agreement states that all those seeking refugee status in either Canada or the US must make their refugee claim in the first country they have entered. This means that if people with refugee claims in the US try to cross the border into Canada, they must be sent back.
However Canadian Immigration experts believe that this agreement should be repealed. They believe that the conditions that migrants who are returned to the US face can be unethical. US detention conditions have been criticized for many years. The conditions in these detention centers can be described as oppressive and abusive.
There are people who believe this agreement with the US should be repealed, but there are others on the other end of the spectrum. It is up to the Canadian Supreme Court to weigh both sides of the argument and to make a decision.
