“What is the step-by-step procedure to apply for a Canada PR Card (or Maple Card)?”

Canada PR Card: Step-by-Step!

Since the implementation of the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act (IRPA) on June 28, 2002, individuals granted permanent resident (PR) status in Canada are issued a PR card as official proof of their status.  A Confirmation of Permanent Residence (CoPR) document is issued at a visa office to clients residing outside of Canada. In Canada, clients confirm their address and physical presence and upload their photograph via the PR Portal. Once their permanent residence is verified, a request is initiated for the production of their PR card. PR cards may be replaced, revoked, or canceled in the event of a change in a client’s status, the client’s death, or the expiration of the card.

Upon completion of PR card production, the card is sent via regular Canada Post mail to the client’s verified Canadian address. Typically, new permanent residents will not need to visit local IRCC offices unless a photograph retake is required or essential information on their Confirmation of Permanent Residence (CoPR) or in the Global Case Management System (GCMS) needs clarification.

Individuals needing to travel shortly after obtaining permanent resident status, but who have not yet received their PR card, must apply for a Permanent Resident Travel Document (PRTD) to re-enter Canada when traveling on a commercial carrier.

Once you’ve obtained your card, it’ll be valid until the expiry date on the card. Normally, it’s issued for 5 years. Your PR cards are sent to the address provided. If you spot mistakes, you can ask for it to be reissued. If you wish to leave Canada you must renew or have a valid PR card before leaving. If you wish to return to Canada without a valid PR card, you’re required to apply for a permanent resident travel document (PRTD).

Permanent residents are not eligible to vote, run for office, or work in positions requiring a high degree of security clearance.

To apply for a Permanent Resident (PR) card in Canada, the following steps are required:

Determine Eligibility:

You need to be a permanent resident and have lived in Canada for at least 730 days in the past five years subject to certain exceptions like working for a Canadian employer abroad or accompanying a Canadian citizen spouse.

Ensure that you fulfill prerequisites such as a minimum amount of days (730) or equivalent accompanying of Canadian spouse/working for a Canadian employer.

Gather Required Documents:

Obtain a copy of your passport, recent photograph, and documentation verifying your residence in Canada, such as proof of residency in Canada. Secure identity and status documents like your Confirmation Of Permanent Residence document.

Fill out Form IMM 5444:

This is the PR card application, and you can find it on the IRCC website. All requests pertaining to a PR card or Permanent Resident Travel Document (PRTD) are submitted via the IMM 5444 application form. Depending on whether they are applying for a PR card (IMM 5445) or a PRTD (IMM 5529), clients must consult the relevant instruction guide.  If you are considering a PRTD you should get legal advice because a PRTD can sometimes lead to the loss of permanent resident status.

Pay the fee:

The IRCC online payment portal will be where the CAD$50 cost must be deposited. Make the online payment, specify the relevant fee type, and preserve the receipt. A physical copy of the receipt should be attached to your application, or it can be directly uploaded with the digital application.

Submit everything:

Mail the form and documents to IRCC. Wait for processing. Once approved, your PR card will be sent to you by mail. Processing times can vary, and your new PR card will usually be valid for five years. The address is Case Processing Centre – PR Card
